Emily Bell is the Leonard Tow Professor of Journalism and Director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism . The Tow Center has built an international reputation for its research on the relationship between technology and journalism, the influence of online platforms, algorithmic propaganda and disinformation campaigns, digital security practices for journalists, and the development of policies shaping this landscape. Bell spent 20 years as a writer, editor and strategist for the Guardian Media Group in the UK. She led the development of the Guardian’s web presence between 2000 and 2010, building it into a global brand, pioneering multimedia formats including podcasting, liveblogging and newsletters before other news organizations. Bell has written extensively on the development of journalism in the digital era, and makes regular appearances on international media. She is a non-executive director of the Guardian Media Group, and sits on the board of overseers for the Columbia Journalism Review.
